How to Read the Map
Four colour codes decide how you use the map. Cost first, because in Como the split between paid and free pins matters more than the split between churches and museums. The official sources for prices and hours are linked from each pin.
Why Colour by Cost, Not by Category
A usual tourist map sorts pins by type: churches, museums, monuments. That says little about your day. In Como the useful split is what a pin costs.
Three of the blue pins, the cathedral, the Tempio Voltiano and the Pinacoteca, share one $6.92 (€6) price, and the Tempio Voltiano and the Pinacoteca share one closed day, so they behave as a group. The green pins cost nothing and fill any gap. Read the map that way and the day plans itself, and the Como Art pass at $11.54 (€10) for two venues or $17.31 (€15) for three within 3 days trims the paid side.
The Blue Pins and Their Shared Monday Closure
Eight pins are blue. The cathedral, the Casa del Fascio, the Pinacoteca and the two closed museums sit inside the walled town, the Tempio Voltiano and the Monumento ai Caduti on the lakefront, and the Silk Museum south of the walls. The Tempio Voltiano, the Pinacoteca and the Silk Museum all close on Mondays, which is the most common planning mistake on this map.
The Casa del Fascio works differently: there are no walk-in visits, only scheduled guided visits led by the architect Attilio Terragni through Slow Lake Como, atrium only, with ID sent by email in advance. The Museo Archeologico Paolo Giovio and the Museo Storico Giuseppe Garibaldi carry no price because their exhibition halls are closed for maintenance with no reopening date, so read them as greyed out.
The Green Pins That Cost Nothing
Eight pins are green and free. The Broletto, San Fedele, Porta Torre and Piazza Cavour sit in and around the walled town. Sant'Abbondio is south of the walls and needs its own walk.
Villa Olmo park and its lido are west along the lakefront, and Stadio Sinigaglia stands beside the Tempio Voltiano. The stadium is free to see from outside, while single-match tickets are sold on the club's own platform, tickets.comofootball.com, as Como 1907 tickets explains. Free does not always mean open: the Villa Olmo building is closed for restoration, and only the park is open.
The Red Pins and Which Station Is Which
Five pins are red: three stations and two boat piers. Como San Giovanni is the uphill station west of the old town, about 40 minutes from Milano Centrale, and the TILO S10 from Lugano continues to it. Como Nord Lago is the lakefront station, about 60 minutes from Milano Cadorna and close to the piers.
Como Camerlata is far south of the centre. The piers on the Piazza Cavour lakefront are where the public boats leave, and the Cernobbio pier is pinned to show which way up the lake they go.

How Como Is Shaped
Como's layout is easy to hold in your head once you see the four parts. The lake closes the city to the north, the walled grid fills the middle, Brunate rises to the east and two railway lines end at opposite sides of town. Knowing the shape means you rarely need to check the map again.
The Walled Grid
The old town is a compact rectangle inside the medieval walls, with Porta Torre on its southern side. The cathedral, the Broletto, San Fedele, the Casa del Fascio and the Pinacoteca at Palazzo Volpi, Via Diaz 84, all sit inside or against it. That is why so many pins cluster in the middle of the map, and why the centre is a walk rather than a ride.
The Lakefront Running West
From Piazza Cavour the lakefront runs two ways. North and east it passes Como Nord Lago station and reaches the funicular's lower station on Piazza Alcide De Gasperi. West it runs through the public gardens to the Monumento ai Caduti, Stadio Sinigaglia and the Tempio Voltiano at Viale Marconi 1.
The Comune puts the Tempio Voltiano 800 metres, a 12-minute walk, from Como San Giovanni and 900 metres, 12 minutes, from Como Lago. Almost everything along this stretch is free, see things to do in Como.
The Stadium and Villa Olmo
Keep going west past the Tempio Voltiano and the lakefront reaches Villa Olmo, the neoclassical villa completed in 1812 by the Odescalchi and owned by the city since 1925. The park is open and free, the lido sits beside it, and the villa building is closed for restoration. It is the quietest corner of the map, and the walk back along the water in the evening is our pick for the best free hour in Como.
The Hill of Brunate
East of the lakefront the ground rises to Brunate, and the funicular does the climbing in 7 minutes from Piazza Alcide De Gasperi 4. It runs daily 06:00-24:00, every 12 to 15 minutes, so the hill never needs planning. The top station and the Faro Voltiano above it are the pins on the hill, and from up there the city below reads like this map.
Two Railway Lines and Camerlata
The two Milan lines end on opposite sides of the old town. The Ferrovienord line from Milano Cadorna ends at Como Nord Lago on the lakefront, and the line from Milano Centrale arrives at Como San Giovanni uphill to the west. Both cost $6.23 (€5.40) from Milan.

What You Walk and What You Ride
Most pins on this map are connected on foot, and the Comune's own distance figures show how small the city is. The table below separates the walks from the rides, with the official fare or distance for each. Walking figures come from the Comune, fares from the operators' published sheets.
Five Routes That Cover the Map
Everything inside the walls is a walk, and so are the lakefront stretches to the Tempio Voltiano and Villa Olmo. A typical day has three rides at most: the funicular to Brunate, a boat if a lake town is on the list, and the train from Milan. A city day with the funicular return and a one-way train from Milan comes to $14.77 (€12.80) in transport, our sum.

The Gaps: What This Map Does Not Pin, and Why
A map earns trust by saying what it leaves out. Six categories of place are deliberately absent here, each for a stated reason. Where an official source publishes nothing, we say so instead of inventing a figure.
The Lake Villages
Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio, Tremezzo and the rest are places, not pins. Putting them on a city map would shrink Como to a dot and hide the fact that the old town, the lakefront and the funicular all sit within a few minutes of each other. Restaurants and Hotels
This map names no restaurant, bar or hotel, because we print no names without a citable list behind them. What we can give is the fixed cost of a night: the tourist tax is charged per person per night for up to 4 nights, $5.77 (€5) in 4-star and 5-star hotels, $4.61 (€4) in 3-star hotels, $3.46 (€3) in 1-star and 2-star hotels, B&Bs and rentals, and $2.31 (€2) in hostels and campsites. Buildings With No Official Visiting Information
San Carpoforo, the Teatro Sociale interior and Terragni's Novocomum apartment building all matter to the city's story, and none gets a pin here because no official visiting hours could be read for them. A pin without hours sends you to a locked door. If that changes, the pins will change.
The same honesty applies to the two civic museums closed for maintenance, which stay on the map only to warn you off.
The Brunate Walking Trails
People walk up and down between Como and Brunate, but we have not read an official route file for the paths, so no trail is drawn. The funicular pins and the Faro Voltiano pin mark the ends, and the Brunate page covers what is confirmed. Treat any trail time you see elsewhere as unverified.
Parking and the ZTL
Como's limited traffic zone is published as rules per category of vehicle rather than one time window, so a single pin or a single time would be wrong. Drivers should assume the historic centre is restricted. The rules are on getting around Como.

What the Season Changes on the Map
The pins do not move, but what is open behind them changes with the calendar. Four seasonal facts decide whether a pin is worth walking to. Check them before you set out, since two of them close pins completely for part of the year.
The Monumento ai Caduti Has a Short Season
Terragni's war memorial opens inside only from 2 June to 4 November, Wednesday and Friday 10:00-13:00 and Saturday and Sunday 14:00-17:00, at $6.92 (€6). Outside that window the pin is a photo stop only.
The Boat Timetable Changes by Season
The fares stay as published: $3.46 (€3) to Cernobbio in band 1 and $13.84 (€12) to Bellagio in band 6 on the ordinary boat. The runs and the journey times change with the seasonal timetable, so check the return boat before you leave the pier. The details are on the Como ferry page.
The Funicular Runs Whatever the Weather
The funicular runs daily 06:00-24:00, every 12 to 15 minutes, at $4.27 (€3.70) one way and $8.54 (€7.40) return, with children up to 12 at $2.88 (€2.50) one way. It is the one pin on the hill that does not depend on the season.
The Villa Olmo Building Is Closed Whatever the Season
The villa building is closed for restoration, and no season changes that. The park around it stays open and free in every month, with access only partially accessible for reduced mobility.
