Casa del Fascio Como

The Casa del Fascio is the building Giuseppe Terragni designed on Piazza del Popolo, with construction starting in 1932. Wikidata records it as a listed cultural property of Italy.

That pedigree can mislead visitors. This is not a museum with a ticket desk and an open door. The Guardia di Finanza, Italy's financial police, has its Comando Provinciale di Como at Piazza del Popolo 4, the same address as the building. It is a working command with staff, offices and vehicles.

The consequence for you is practical. There is no walk-in opening, no standing exhibition and no published opening hours, because an official page does not publish any. Entry happens only through the guided visit described below, and the identity document rule exists because you would be entering a police headquarters.

The visit is run by Slow Lake Como, the only booking channel we found for entry. The guide is architect Attilio Terragni, great-grandson of Giuseppe Terragni and director of the Terragni Archive. He mixes the architecture with family stories about the building, which is something no conventional city tour can offer.

Set your expectations on scope. The visit covers the atrium only. No other interior rooms are opened, and no official page describes access beyond the atrium. The visit lasts about 1.5 hours and is conducted in Italian only. An English-language visit is not published, so non-Italian speakers should decide in advance whether an hour and a half of Italian commentary works for them.

The visit includes insurance. Accessibility of the atrium is not published anywhere we checked, so if step-free access matters to you, contact the operator directly before booking. No bags or backpacks are allowed inside.

The process has one step people forget, and forgetting it means being refused at the door. Email your identity documents immediately after paying, not the day before the visit. Here is the full sequence.

• Open the Slow Lake Como page and check the calendar. Visit dates appear in green. Past dates are greyed out, and if the next dates shown are already behind you, check the calendar again later for newly added dates rather than assuming the programme has ended.
• Book and pay through the page. Adults pay $17.31 (€15) and children 6 to 14 pay $5.77 (€5), under fives go free, and a 6% FareHarbor booking commission is added.
• Right after booking, email copies of the identity documents of every participant to [email protected]. If you skip this, access is refused.
• Note the minimum participant rule. If not enough people book, the visit does not run, so keep your plans flexible for that date.
• On the day, go to the meeting point at Piazza Verdi, opposite the Teatro Sociale, not to Piazza del Popolo. Leave bags and backpacks wherever you are staying, because they are not allowed inside.

If you cannot join a visit, or the Italian-only format puts you off, you still get the main event. The building faces Piazza del Popolo, a public square, and the facade can be seen and photographed from it at any hour. For most visitors the facade is the visit, and it costs nothing.

How long to allow? Outside only, our estimate is 10 to 15 minutes, longer if you want to study the composition or the square is busy. The map on this page shows it close to Como Cathedral and the Broletto, so it fits an old town circuit.

One honest caveat about photography. No published rule states what you may or may not photograph at this police building. The sensible move is to ask before pointing a camera at staff, vehicles or the entrance while people are working. The facade itself can be photographed from the public square.

The Casa del Fascio is the first. The second is the Monumento ai Caduti on the lakefront, the tall war memorial by the water. Authorship there is layered, and the Comune states it this way: Filippo Tommaso Marinetti suggested basing the celebratory tower on a drawing by Antonio Sant'Elia, the project then involved Enrico Prampolini, then Attilio Terragni, and finally, with construction already advanced, also Giuseppe Terragni.

So the memorial is a shared and layered credit, while the Casa del Fascio is squarely Terragni's own building.

The monument has its own practicalities. It opens seasonally with set hours and a small ticket, and the top is reached by a steep, narrow staircase that is not advised for people with mobility problems, heart conditions, asthma, vertigo or claustrophobia. The building is at Piazza del Popolo 4, on the edge of the old town, and the square is public. No official walking time is published from the cathedral, the stations or the pier, so follow the map on this page. Driving

If you have a booking, plan the visit as an anchor for the day. It lasts about 1.5 hours and starts at Piazza Verdi, so pair it with the cathedral, the Broletto and a walk along the lakefront before or after. If you have no booking, give the facade its 10 to 15 minutes on your route between the old town and the lake, then continue to the Monumento ai Caduti for the second Terragni-linked work.
