Cheap Hotels in Como: How to Cut the Cost of a Night

Lever One: Pick the Category, Not the Price

The tourist tax rewards cheap categories directly. A hostel bed or campsite pitch carries $2.31 (€2) per person per night, one and two star hotels and every B&B, affittacamere, apartment and holiday rental carry $3.46 (€3), three star hotels carry $4.61 (€4), and four and five star hotels carry $5.77 (€5). On a week for two, the gap between the bottom and the top band is $27.70 (€24) of pure tax, which is real money against a budget room. A self-catering apartment pays the same band as a one star hotel, and its kitchen can cut meal costs. Under-14s pay no tax at all, so family rooms in a low category get cheaper still.

One caution: the Comune collects the tax through the accommodation manager, who must issue a receipt. The official tourist-tax page does not state whether online booking platforms collect and remit it, so budget to pay it at the desk on arrival rather than assuming it is in the booking total.

Lever Two: Book the Fourth Night, Not the Fifth

The tax is charged for a maximum of four consecutive nights, per art. 4 of the Comune's own regulation. Nights five, six and seven add zero tax per person. For two adults at the $3.46 (€3) band, nights five to seven would otherwise add $20.80 (€18), our sum.

It also removes any reason to split a long stay into separate bookings. Short stays are taxed on every night, long stays are not.

Lever Three: Choose the Base, Not Just the Building

No official source ranks Como's districts by room price, so search each base separately and compare the daily transport it adds. The area around Como San Giovanni station sits uphill from the centre on the Milano Centrale line. The lakefront and Borgo Vico stretch west along the flat shore.

The walled old town puts you on foot to the ferry pier on Piazza Cavour. Brunate, up the funicular, adds $8.54 (€7.40) a day in return rides unless you buy the weekly card. The table of bases below shows the fares.

Lever Four: Sleep Outside Como and Commute

Both Milan to Como rail lines cost $6.23 (€5.40) each way under the regional tariff, so a day return from a cheaper Milan bed adds $12.46 (€10.80) per person before you have seen the lake. The Milano Centrale to Como San Giovanni line takes about 40 minutes, the Cadorna to Como Lago line about 60 minutes and arrives directly on the lakefront. A ten-ride carnet at $57.70 (€50) cuts the per-trip price to $5.77 (€5), and children travel half fare between 4 and 14, free under 14 with an adult family member holding a ticket.

Run the sums honestly: if the Como room you want costs a big premium over the Milan one, the commute pays, but for a short trip the two $6.23 (€5.40) fares each way often wipe out a small saving.

Lever Five: Arrive Without a Car

A car is the fastest way to un-cheap a cheap room. Como's walled centre is a ZTL, cameras police the entry gates, and the parking page shows what a day inside costs. The clearest example is the Autosilo via Auguadri in the heart of the old town, where 14 daylight hours cost $31.70 (€27.50).

That single figure can exceed a night of tourist tax for a whole family several times over. The alternatives are the Tavernola park-and-ride on via per Cernobbio at $1.15 (€1) a day, or the blue-line street spaces in the green forfait zone at $1.15 (€1) an hour or $5.77 (€5) a day. The Hostel in the Villa Olmo Complex

Como does have an international hostel. The Comune's own page for the Villa Olmo complex states that the site includes an ostello internazionale alongside a lakeside lido, which would put it in the lowest tourist tax band. That is where the published facts stop: the Comune page does not give the hostel's street address, bed count, opening season or current operator, and no official operator page with those details could be confirmed either. What to do instead is treat it as a lead rather than a booking: search Como through the Agoda listing and confirm the details before planning a trip around it.

The Campsite Question

Despite the Comune's tourist tax sheet listing campsites in the $2.31 (€2) band, no campsite inside the administrative boundary of the Comune di Como could be confirmed from an official source. The campsites that do appear near the lake sit in other municipalities, such as Oliveto Lario in the Province of Lecco. So do not plan a Como city trip around a city campsite, because none was found.

If a pitch is the plan, look at the other lake towns and check which comune you would actually be staying in, because Brunate and Cernobbio are separate comuni with their own tax rules not covered by Como's sheet.

Where That Leaves the Budget Traveller
